Decorative Sofa Cushion Concordia by Margaret Eland

Date

Date June 2025

This elegant, one-of-a-kind cushion is crafted from hand-woven horsehair fabric and adorned with refined silver embroidery. The textile is composed of 70% natural black horsehair and 30% cotton threads (UK), creating a durable, textured base with a distinctive sheen and structure.

The embroidery is executed using the traditional goldwork technique, specifically couching, where metallic threads are laid on the fabric surface and secured with fine stitching. This method preserves the thread’s shine and prevents breakage, allowing the metallic elements to remain vibrant over time.

Though historically gold embroidery was used to signify prestige and ceremonial importance, silverwork embroidery offers a modern and equally sophisticated reinterpretation.

Materials used in the embroidery include:
– Japanese silver thread
– Japanese and French glass beads and metallic threads
The back of the cushion is made of genuine black suede, adding texture, contrast, and a sense of understated luxury. This side is also delicately embroidered, enhancing the cushion’s beauty from every angle. Filled with natural horsehair, the cushion maintains its shape, structure, and breathability over time.
